If you already hold a Portuguese residence permit, renewal is now primarily handled online through AIMA. The important part is identifying which procedure applies to your permit before starting: the standard Renewal Portal does not necessarily cover every type of residence document or every historical case.

Can you renew your residence permit?
For a standard temporary residence permit, renewal is not simply an administrative card replacement.
Portuguese law requires the applicant to continue meeting several conditions, including having sufficient means of subsistence, accommodation and a regular tax and Social Security situation. AIMA's latest notice that explicitly states an expiry-date range said the portal covered standard residence permits expiring from 1 July 2025 to 31 October 2026. What if your permit expired a long time ago?

CPLP, Golden Visa and EU residence documents
Do not assume the standard process applies to every residence document.

Documents and requirements for renewal
The exact upload list depends on the type of residence permit, but the core requirements generally include:
- a valid passport or travel document;
- your current residence permit;
- evidence of sufficient means of subsistence;
- proof of accommodation;
- a regular tax situation, where applicable;
- compliance with Social Security obligations, where applicable;
- any additional evidence required for your specific residence category.

How to renew step by step
First, check the expiry date and type of residence document you hold.
Then access the official AIMA renewal channel applicable to that permit and identify yourself using the information requested by the platform.
Review your personal details carefully, particularly your passport, NIF, NISS, email and address. Incorrect information can interfere with notifications or delivery of the new card.
Upload the requested documentation and pay the administrative charges generated for your application.
AIMA then analyses the application. If updated biometric data is required, you may be called to an AIMA office for an appointment. The agency states that physical attendance is required when it needs to verify documentation or collect new biometrics rather than as an automatic step for every online renewal. (aima.gov.pt)
How much does renewal cost?
There is no single fee that applies to every residence permit.
AIMA updated its administrative fee table on 1 March 2026, and fees vary according to the residence category and procedure. AIMA also states that where a procedure is available digitally, online submission benefits from a 25% reduction compared with the standard applicable fee. (aima.gov.pt)
Check the current AIMA fee table immediately before applying rather than relying on an amount quoted in an older guide.
What happens after you submit the renewal?
Keep the receipt or other proof generated by the platform.
For older residence permits specifically covered by Decree-Law 85-B/2025, Portugal created a 180-day proof of renewal after payment of the application. (diariodarepublica.pt)
The general Immigration Act separately states that a renewal receipt has the same effects as the residence permit for 60 days and may be renewed. What if your residence card has already expired?
An expired date on the physical card does not always mean that your right of residence disappears on that exact day.
AIMA has clarified that, for non-EU nationals whose cards expired after 30 June 2025, the right of residence in Portugal continues for six months after the expiry date. International travel is a separate issue and should not be inferred solely from your legal residence status inside Portugal.
Avoid these renewal problems
Apply as soon as your 90-day renewal window opens rather than waiting for the card to expire.
Check that your tax and Social Security situation is regular before submitting the application.
Make sure AIMA has your current address and email.
Do not use the ordinary Renewal Portal if your residence category has a dedicated procedure.
And if your permit has been expired for more than six months without an active renewal case, check your position with AIMA before trying to submit an ordinary renewal, because current government guidance treats these cases differently.
The central rule is simple: identify the residence document first, then choose the renewal channel. In Portugal's current system, that is more reliable than following a generic “AIMA renewal” tutorial that may have been written for an older procedure.
