Is Portugal Actually Affordable?

The short answer: compared to London, Amsterdam, or Paris, yes, significantly. Compared to Southeast Asia, not so much. Portugal hits a sweet spot for people from higher-cost Western countries who want to reduce their expenses without giving up quality of life.

That said, costs have gone up quite a bit in Lisbon and Porto since 2020. If you're watching your budget closely, the real deals are in medium-sized cities like Braga, Coimbra, Setúbal, or towns in the interior.

Rent: The Biggest Variable

Rent is by far the biggest variable in your Portuguese budget.

City / Area T1 (Studio) T2 (1BR) T3 (2BR)
Lisbon city centre €1,100–1,600 €1,400–2,200 €1,900–3,000
Lisbon suburbs €800–1,100 €900–1,400 €1,200–1,800
Porto city centre €800–1,200 €1,000–1,600 €1,300–2,100
Porto suburbs €600–850 €750–1,100 €950–1,400
Braga €500–700 €650–900 €850–1,200
Algarve (year-round) €700–1,000 €900–1,400 €1,200–1,900
Interior Portugal €350–550 €450–700 €600–950

Food & Groceries

Portugal has great food at fair prices, especially if you eat like a local.

Category Monthly cost
Groceries (1 person) €200–300
Groceries (couple) €320–450
Eating out 2–3×/week +€150–250
Coffee culture (daily café) +€40–60

Tip: A prato do dia (daily lunch special) at a local restaurant, including starter, main course, dessert, and a drink, usually runs about €8–12.

€2,000–2,500/month

Comfortable life in Porto or Lisbon suburbs. Good apartment, mix of cooking and eating out, some travel.

€3,000+/month

Comfortable life in central Lisbon or Porto. Good apartment centrally located, regular restaurants, travel, savings.

Utilities Breakdown

Utility Average monthly
Electricity €50–90
Water €15–25
Gas €15–30
Internet (fibre) €25–40
Mobile (unlimited data) €15–25

The Verdict

Portugal offers great value for money, especially if you're earning in a stronger currency (USD, GBP, CHF). The key is matching your expectations to the city: Lisbon and Porto have become genuinely pricey by European standards, but the rest of the country is still very affordable.
